why does our creative energy flow the most when we feel let down by the world?
on friendship breakups, career losses & your need to create.
there’s a very specific kind of silence that arrives after you realise something you trusted isn’t holding you anymore.
sometimes it’s a friendship that slowly stops recognising you. sometimes it’s someone you would have shown up for without thinking twice, suddenly not showing up for you. sometimes it’s an opportunity you quietly built your confidence around disappearing without explanation. sometimes it’s the version of your life you thought was forming just… not forming? you can enter two modes after this - you either go numb, or you crash out.
and the strangest thing is what happens next.
ideas return. writing returns. clarity returns. questions return. it almost feels unfair. like why does thinking become sharper exactly when everything else becomes uncertain?
i used to think creative energy came from inspiration. now i think it comes from rupture. because disappointment forces you to meet yourself without distractions.
there is a kind of grief that comes specifically from friendships changing. not dramatic endings. not clean closures. just the slow realization that the person who once understood your language no longer speaks it with you.
you replay conversations in your head. you reread messages. you wonder whether you imagined the closeness. you wonder whether you asked for too much. you wonder whether you changed too fast. and then one day you realise something much quieter but much heavier.
you were building parts of your identity inside that connection. so when it shifts, something inside you has to reorganise itself. that reorganisation is where creative energy begins.
because suddenly you’re asking questions again about who you are without proximity, without reassurance, without someone mirroring your momentum back to you. and those questions demand answers.
career losses feel different but they cut just as deep.
there is a particular humiliation in working toward something that never materialises. especially when you did everything correctly. especially when you showed up early, stayed late, applied widely, tried harder, believed longer. you start wondering whether effort actually translates into movement. whether timing matters more than discipline. whether the world notices at all. it’s uncomfortable to admit how much of your confidence quietly depends on things working out.
and when they don’t, something honest begins to surface. you stop pretending certainty exists. you start asking what you actually want instead of what you thought would make sense. that shift changes people.
personal losses are the hardest to explain because they don’t always look like losses from the outside. sometimes it’s losing the version of yourself that expected loyalty to be permanent. sometimes it’s losing the assumption that sincerity guarantees reciprocity. sometimes it’s losing the belief that if you care deeply enough about something, it will stay.
those losses don’t show up on resumes or timelines. but they rearrange your interior world completely. and once that rearrangement starts, you begin noticing everything differently.
you notice how much energy you were spending maintaining expectations. you notice how many futures you quietly assumed would happen. you notice how often you postponed your own direction while waiting for alignment from the world around you.
when that illusion disappears, attention comes back to you. and attention is where creation starts.
i think the reason lows make highs feel sharper is because contrast increases awareness. when everything is stable, your mind drifts. when something breaks, your mind watches.
you observe yourself thinking. you observe your reactions. you observe your patterns. suddenly you are present inside your own life instead of moving automatically through it. that presence feels intense at first. almost uncomfortable.
but it also makes you honest. you start writing things you wouldn’t normally admit. thinking things you wouldn’t normally say out loud. noticing fears you usually avoid naming.
like the fear of being replaceable. or the fear of being forgettable. or the fear that maybe the world will keep moving whether you arrive where you planned to or not. those thoughts are difficult to sit with. but they are also where the deepest work begins.
there’s also something nobody really talks about when it comes to disappointment. how much quieter you become afterward. you stop performing confidence for a while. you stop explaining yourself as much. you stop narrating your plans before they exist. and in that quiet space, something else starts forming. a version of you that isn’t waiting to be understood before moving forward, that doesn’t need timelines to feel real and starts building again, but differently this time.
more carefully. more intentionally. more honestly.
i used to think creativity meant having something beautiful to say. now i think it means having something true to face.
most of the things i’ve written that actually mattered to me came from moments where something didn’t work out the way i hoped it would. moments where a friendship shifted. moments where effort didn’t translate into opportunity. moments where i realised i had been holding onto versions of people or futures that only existed in my imagination.
those moments feel heavy while you’re inside them. but they also make you pay attention to your life in a way comfort never does. and sometimes that attention becomes direction. sometimes it becomes language. sometimes it becomes the first honest version of yourself you’ve met in a long time.the highs feel high because the lows exist.
sometimes the world letting you down is exactly what makes you return to yourself.

Yes!! It’s like our grief and strong emotions got let out and are spinning and swimming looking somewhere to land and only do so safely when put into artwork or words or music. 💛
