you're not in love w them, you're in love w your unconscious potential reflected in them
an exploration of limerence, jungian projection, and why obsession often hides an unlived life.
the moment it begins
you’re doing completely fine on your own and then it usually starts suddenly with something embarrassingly small. a conversation that lasts ten minutes too long. a look that lingers half a second past normal. a message that arrives late at night and something inside you just.…shifts?
their texts actually start carrying weight. you start reading them slower. their attention feels different. you replay the smallest interactions in in your head while brushing your teeth, showering, while walking home, while trying to fall asleep. within weeks they begin occupying an absurd amount of space in your mind. here’s where we start freaking out and calling it ‘love’ maybe? because that is the closest word we have for this kind of intensity. but most of the time what you are experiencing is not love at all. it is limerence.
the beautiful illusion
limerence is a psychological state of obsessive infatuation that feeds on uncertainty and imagination. the person slowly stops existing as a complex human being and becomes a canvas where your mind paints possibility. you are no longer responding to who they actually are. you are responding to what they seem to represent to you. the life you could have. the confidence you could grow into. the depth you could feel. the contentment they seem to have, the vision, the drive. the version of yourself you quietly hope to become.
a mirror in another body
carl jung believed that intense attraction often has less to do with the other person and more to do with what our unconscious sees in them. he called these inner forces the anima and the animus. the anima is the feminine dimension within a man’s psyche. the animus is the masculine dimension within a woman’s. they represent qualities we have not fully developed within ourselves.
a man may become captivated by a woman who embodies emotional depth, intuition, beauty, creativity. not only because she possesses those traits, but because they awaken something dormant within him.
a woman may feel pulled toward a man who radiates clarity, direction, confidence, agency. again, not simply because of who he is, but because he reflects the strength she has yet to fully claim in herself.
this is why certain attractions feel almost hypnotic. so intense & passionate, you almost believe it’s some kind of divine karmic intervention. it is not just the person you are seeing. it is the version of yourself you glimpse through them.
when life is empty
limerence becomes strongest when your life lacks direction. when your days are filled with curiosity, meaningful work, creativity or purpose, your psychological energy has somewhere to flow. but when life feels vague and undefined the mind begins searching for intensity. suddenly a person appears and all that unused emotional energy rushes toward them. they become the project your life currently lacks.
modern life quietly amplifies this dynamic. hours dissolve into doomscrolling and passive entertainment. the mind remains stimulated but directionless. so when someone finally sparks intensity it feels like oxygen.
the story we write
this is why so many people fall in love with an imagined version of someone based on little of what they know about them. the mind constructs a beautiful narrative about who the other person is and what the relationship will become. reality quietly stands beside it with a very different script.
the tragedy is not that love fails. the tragedy is that we mistake imagination for intimacy.
the most dangerous romances are the ones where you fall in love with your own unlived life.
the energy you reclaim
the difficult truth is that you were rarely in love with them. you were in love with the version of yourself that seemed possible around them. the life you imagined living. the person you imagined becoming.
the way out is not bitterness toward romance. it is redirection. the same psychological intensity that fuels limerence can build something extraordinary when it is poured into creation. art. work. ideas. friendships. a life that genuinely excites you enough that your mind no longer needs to manufacture obsession.
the mirror breaks
sometimes the person you believe you love is simply a mirror that briefly reveals the life you secretly want for yourself. how caring, nourishing, cheerful, happy, ambitious or strong they are. it could be anything. the real work begins when you stop chasing the reflection and start becoming the person you saw in it.
breaking free from limerence
understanding the idea is one thing. living it is awfully goddamn difficult. it’ll make you wanna pull your hair out but you must overcome. if you recognise yourself in this pattern, the work begins with reclaiming the energy you unknowingly gave away.
first,
identify the projection. ask yourself what qualities you believe this person has that fascinate you? confidence, ambition, creativity, freedom. then ask a harder question. are these qualities you secretly want to develop within yourself?
second,
reclaim the attention. obsessive thinking is raw psychological energy. redirect it. instead of replaying conversations or stalking their social media, put that intensity into building something. PLEASE. you’re meant to create and you must create. writing, art, learning, creating, building a career, strengthening friendships.
third,
reduce fantasy fuel. limerence feeds on partial information. distance helps break the illusion. less social media exposure. fewer imagined scenarios. more engagement with the real world. cut them off. completely. no contact is the way to go. trust me.
finally, build a life that competes with obsession. when your days are filled with curiosity, purpose, creativity and movement, your mind no longer needs to invent intensity through another person.
the person you thought you loved may simply have been a mirror showing you the life you secretly wanted. the real transformation begins when you start becoming the person you saw reflected in them.
Wishing you a very happy finding yourself :)
Yours lovingly,
Nush <3

Beautifully written Nush. Cool and thoughtful. The projection and illusion is real, not just in romantic relationships but also in many other aspects of life. Developing awareness to spot ourselves as we slide into it, and have the courage to break up with it is the start of new growth. Thanks for writing and sharing
You've explained it so well, I was completely gripped by the idea of limerence and now it all makes sense.
loved it :p
